If you own property in St. Louis County, the state auditor wants to know how appeals get heard. Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick launched an investigation after whistleblower complaints that the process is unfair and potentially unlawful.
The complaints target the county's two-board system. They say appeals may be assigned unfairly and that one board may rule for taxpayers at a significantly higher rate than the other. County Executive Dr. Sam Page told First Alert 4 it's “not lost on anyone” that the review launched “a week before the Missouri auditor’s re-election,” but the county will “certainly cooperate.”
The investigation follows an audit of Jackson County's appeals process released earlier this year, which found taxpayers were unfairly disadvantaged. State law lets Fitzpatrick issue subpoenas if county officials don't cooperate.
