- ➤ St. Louis County Pet Adoption Center is asking locals to adopt or foster dogs to help lower the shelter’s crowded numbers, as nearly 200 dogs are staying at the facility and all are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. The center invites the community to meet the dogs at BARK-Tober Fest from 5-9 p.m. this Saturday at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood + the event will feature pet-friendly vendors, a costume contest, and a donation drive. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ An international study led by a Saint Louis University professor found that severe drought has hurt Missouri grasslands and may affect local conservation and farming efforts. The research showed that areas with diverse plants handled the dry conditions better—suggesting new strategies could help mitigate climate change impacts. First Alert 4
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Town and Country Board of Aldermen approved a contract with Integra Construction to repair the Longview Farm Park bridge after a storm-fallen oak damaged its structure in early June—Integra submitted the low bid of $49,836 and the bill passed 7-0 on Oct. 13. West Newsmagazine
- ➤ St. Louis County opened a childcare center for children of police officers and department personnel — the center gives parents daily updates and supports officers working unconventional shifts. It is the second such facility in the nation and county officials hope it will aid in recruiting and keeping staff. First Alert 4
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The federal shutdown means Medicare — the program that pays hospitals — will not cover some telehealth services, putting Missouri seniors and those receiving care at home at risk of not getting help. St. Louis Post-Dispatch
