Good morning, Chesterfield. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • Demetrius Strother, 22, pleaded guilty to a 2023 murder near a MetroLink stop and was sentenced to life plus 10 years, admitting to shooting Jaylin Johnson after exiting a train in St. Louis County — his plea also covered robbery and armed criminal action.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Marquette High School will focus on literacy as teachers gave lessons and students watched slideshows on the second day of school, showing how reading skills are used in every class. The school will work on four standards—explaining main ideas, making inferences, finding word meanings, and checking arguments—and later add the CER writing method to help students write better.  Marquette Messenger
  • On Aug. 25, many students were tardy when the new start time led to adjusted bus schedules and classes began at 9:51 a.m.—49 students were reported late by school officials. The change, which offers teachers more professional development days and extra days off, has caused confusion and the next Late Start is set for Sept. 22.  Marquette Messenger

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • East-West Gateway is developing a regional plan that will look into problems like a weak economy and low school performance—factors that contribute to a slow or falling population instead of naming population loss as a main issue. Staff will give more details, including costs and a timeline, to the board next month.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
