Good morning, Chesterfield. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 24th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The St. Louis County Animal Care and Control Adoption Center in Olivette reopened on May 19 after closing on April 30 due to a canine parvovirus outbreak that led to 19 positive cases and euthanasias—veterinary staff then disinfected the facility and extended the quarantine to ensure safety. County officials now urge pet owners to vaccinate their pets and monitor for symptoms such as lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea.  West Newsmagazine

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two companies from St. Louis pledged over $600,000 for tornado cleanup after the May 16 storm—Enterprise Mobility donated $250,000 and is bringing vehicles from Texas to provide temporary rentals while Bunge, a company from Chesterfield, contributed $100,000 and is collecting supplies.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Manufacturers explained that outdoor tornado sirens—60 in the city and 204 in the county—are built to alert only people outside, which may explain why some residents did not hear the warning during a May 16th tornado. St. Louis officials have allocated $3.9 million to replace the 25-year-old system as experts stress no single tool can reach everyone during severe weather.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
  • Officials in Chesterfield and state leaders are working with FEMA to assess damage from the May 16 tornado that swept from Clayton to North City. They say the review—like the one after the March 14 tornadoes—may take weeks or months before federal disaster funds are approved.  First Alert 4
  • Wayne Dunker was appointed as Chesterfield’s director of parks, recreation and arts effective May 27, replacing former director TW Dieckmann. Dunker brings over 25 years of experience in managing public parklands and will lead the city’s parks, including Central Park and the Chesterfield Amphitheater.  West Newsmagazine
