EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Dr. Keith Marty retired after 14 years of leading Parkway Schools as the 2024-25 school year ended — community partners held receptions to honor his service. He will mentor new superintendents and work with CharacterPlus — and he plans to enjoy more time with his wife at a new home in northern Wisconsin.  West Newsmagazine
  • Missouri lawmakers approved a bill that will ban cellphones in classrooms from the opening to closing bell beginning in the 2026-2027 school year—local districts set rules with exceptions for health and learning needs. The law also requires schools to create plans for emergencies like medical issues, natural disasters and intruders.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Two bison calves were born on May 6 at Lone Elk Park, and Park Supervisor Pat Curry said the births signal a healthy herd — a sign of thriving habitat. The park — open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset — reminds visitors to remain in their vehicles while watching the wildlife.  First Alert 4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • St. Charles County grew nearly 15% from 2010 to 2024, with a rising senior population driving new affordable housing challenges. Local leaders in Cottleville, Dardenne Prairie and Foristell are taking different measures—some proposing a pause on new construction while others plan for new businesses—to balance charm with necessary growth.  West Newsmagazine
  • A federal bankruptcy judge set an auction for KDHX’s broadcast license on May 30 via Zoom after the station filed for bankruptcy in March with about $2 million in debt+ two evangelical groups have made bids. Bids are due by May 27 and the winning bidder must pay a fee of $152,000 and up to $300,000 to cover costs+ the auction process now moves forward amid community concerns.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
  • Yesterday, the Missouri Supreme Court heard arguments on whether cities and counties can add a 3% tax on marijuana sales—a dispute that began in 2023 and may change tax rules in over 70 local areas—and the case focuses on a Florissant dispensary where the combined tax nears 21%.  St. Louis Post-Dispatch
